You know those perfectly curated wellness journeys you see online? Mine isn’t one of them. Let me share what my week of movement looked like—canceled plans, unexpected victories, and plenty of workout-induced whining included!
The week started with the best intentions (don’t they all?). I had planned to join the Orlando Girls Walk Club at Lake Eola for “Touched by Type 1,” a meaningful walk supporting Type 1 Diabetes awareness and research. But life happened; my friend had to cancel, and I’ll be honest—going alone didn’t have the same appeal. The Body Works class I’d been enjoying at LA Fitness? I also missed it. Sometimes, momentum takes a pause, and that’s okay, too.
But here’s where the story turns toward the blue mats of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu College Park. Yesterday, I returned to training with my friend Brandice in tow. There’s something magical about watching someone experience their first all-female jiu-jitsu class, especially when they deeply connect with it. As we learned break-falls and self-defense techniques together, I watched Brandice light up with that familiar spark of empowerment—the same one I felt during my first class. After class, she shared how much she loved the format, the pace, and especially the group dynamic. These moments remind me why sharing our wellness journey with others matters so much.
And then there’s today’s session with Victor, my trainer. Oh, friends, let me tell you! Picture my typically complaining self (because, let’s be real, I whine my way through most workouts), achieving something I never thought possible. Between my protests and dramatic sighs—much to Victor’s and my husband’s endless amusement—I managed to bench press 25 pounds on each arm—a personal record!
Victor, probably used to my ongoing commentary, challenged me to a countdown circuit with a 30-pound kettlebell and bar pushups. “Under 10 minutes,” he said with that knowing smile. Did I complain? Absolutely. Did he laugh at my theatrical performance? You bet! Did I do it anyway? Somehow, between the whining and the “Are we done yet?” moments, I completed the set.
But here’s what I’m learning about this movement journey:
- Progress doesn’t require perfection (or silence!)
- Community makes everything better
- Sometimes, the weeks we think are “off track” still hold victories
- You can complain AND succeed (I’m living proof!)
- Real growth happens in the messy middle
The truth is that wellness doesn’t always look like peaceful sunrise meditations and graceful yoga flows. Sometimes, it seems like missed walks and rescheduled classes. Other times, it’s celebrating your friend’s first martial arts class or hitting a PR while dramatically declaring your imminent doom.
And you know what? That’s beautiful, too.
Your Reflection Invitation:
- When was the last time you celebrated a “messy” victory?
- Who makes your movement journey more enjoyable?
- What’s your favorite way to complain during workouts? (Let’s share notes!)
- How do you keep going when plans change?
- What unexpected wins have you discovered lately?
Remember: Progress isn’t about perfect attendance or silent determination. It’s about showing up anyway, whining through the hard parts, and celebrating every win—especially the imperfect ones.
With warmth, light, and maybe a little post-workout drama,
